Okay, so I read Uzimaki a bit back, like 'round about a year and kinda just remembered it right now. Dude, Uzimaki is amazing! It's like one of the best horror manga I've read, which to be fair I've not read all that many that wasn't from Junji Ito. But alas, moving on.
So, the whole thing is really interesting and based around the idea of comsmic horror around a spiral. And look, not every part of the story was paranoia inducing fear, like the grand majority of the hospital arc just grossed me out instead of made me scared. But the entire story as a whole is just fantastic. Like, the way the story is written feels like the story slowly but surely is spiraling into a worse problem, same as the horros which show up as well.
Also, more interestingly is that thanks to the format the theme of obession is way more proment. Like, one of the reasons why an anime adaptation wouldn't work is you need to turn the page in the manga, making you one of the spiral obessed people as well. Not only that, the whole page turner jumpscare that that Junji Ito uses quite a bit. You know, like a full page or two spread afer you turn the page.
I think one of my favourite things about Uzimaki is that the 'monster' is just really well chosen. Like spirals are literally everywhere. Look at your fingertips, those are spirals. You hair that is curly, spirals. Water currents, spirals. The fucking cosmos, spirals. So it really makes you paranoid after reading it. Like fun story, after I read the manag, my mom gave my a sandwich that was made out of one of those spiral rolls... Yeah, I may or may not have been too jumpy to eat that.
But yeah. I haven't seen any of the Uzimaki anime adapations, and quite frankly I will not. I've seen the Junji Ito manic series and the Junji Ito collection. Let's just say, those are much better watched on par with Ghost Stories Dub. It's not good, per say, but a damn good time if you want to laugh. The tricky thing is most of Junji Ito's horror scenes can very quickly go into comedy without his very detailed style of art. Like, seeing a man twist himself into a spiral, funny. Actually seeing the gory details of it? A lot less funny.
But yeah. That's todays quick page upload. Uh... Have fun. I need to think of a sign off... Fenrir over and out.
