There's a dead rat somewhere in the office I work at. Yay... I fucking hate it here. Like, holy shit, I don't think I've smelt rot and death before and I freaking hate it man.
So, until that gets cleaned out, I'm working in another place. But, wanna know something interesting?
Good? If you don't want to read the following descriptions of the smell and what not, rather abandon the quest here. Okay? Because after this point I'm going to be explaining some of the sensations of the smell and that can be pretty unsettling or gross or unwanted.
The smell. Oh, god it's bad. Like, holy shit. I've read stuff with descriptions before but god damn. You can somehow taste the coppery-ness in the air. It sits on your throat and chest and the air itself feels heavy with the smell.
At first it didn't smell too bad. A bit like blood and wet. Almost a little musty. It was fineish. Not anything you want to breath in for a long while but eh... You get paid to sit and work in the room, might as well truck through it. By after the weekend and as it got warmer. Fuck, it was bad.
It wasn't fun to breath in at all. It kinda left a itchy, sort of furry texture inside my throat. My body probably didn't enjoy having to try to filter out the air. And the smell was really strong. I admitiatly have a bad senes of smell (only really able to smell very potent smells for some reason) and I was wearing a mask but still. I can kinda taste it.
And good god, my poor co-worker. Bro was gagging. I was half worried he was going to throw up. He decided that we should leave, so we went back to the office on the lunch break to try to get our equipment out but he couldn't go back in so I had to get it out. Not fun. I hated that, but uh... Glad to help. Another victory for the I.T guys. Yayy!
More interesting to me is that I didn't entirely smell the scent. Probably because I can't smell very well. But I felt it. The air felt heavier, there was a mild tingling in the back of my throat and I could kinda feel the air's texture in my lungs.
So, yeah. If you wanna write something, feel free to cannibalise the above description. Uh... And I'd rather never have to smell that again.
It did kinda make me want to write a story or something about rot. Probably zombies if I am guessing from my current writing run.
I don't know how to explain my sense of smell. I just know that it seems pretty weak compared to the people areound me. Like, I can smell. Blood, raw meat, alcohol, cigarettes or other more potent scents, I easily can smell. just, for some reason more soft smells I don't really pick up on.
Like, I can smell pollen, if it's a shit ton of pollen. But if I was asked to smell a flower, it just smells like air. Or I can smell food, but not very very well. It's kinda faint and usually just smells like one or two ingredients. For example, I can smell steak but usually just the cooked somewhat oil-like smell. Or a chicken roast, I can smell maybe cinnomen or just chicken not anything else.
Like, one time, my mom asked me to throw out a cider which came as an complamentry thing. I had to pour it down the drain, and fuck. I couldtaste the damn thing. I could feel the bubles on my tongue. So, I settled for some off brand-coke to remove the feeling.
It's kinda a running gag where someone would ask me to smell something and I'd just go try to smell it and than be like "Wait, I forgot, I can't smell."
It's kinda annoying because, one, the smells I can smell are either annoying or frustrating (like booze... I don't want to feel for a drink everytime I faintly smell cider) and two, I kinda want to figure out what other things smell like. More so for description in writing. I want to figure out how to explain that something smelt like the woods without just saying that.
